As described in my essay, Off The Rectangle! all materials used in the construction of my collages are found objects, typically discarded and collected from the sides of roads and streets.
Stage 1, Basic Outline: Three objects contribute to the primary image structure. In the case of this collage the final image closely follows the initial outline and internal structure, but this is not usual. More likely the addition of new materials push the emerging and final image in entirely unexpected directions. The black backdrop on which the collage is constructing is a large plastic garbage bag use to protect the floor of my garage, which serves as my studio.
Stage 2, Construction: As the image begins to take shape the relating objects are spot-pasted to maintain their positions relative to each other. As the image begins to take shape the relating objects are spot-pasted to maintain their positions relative to each other. While working on this collage I found I was less rigid about the stages of image construction, more able to allow chance and spontaneity to determine the final image outcome.
Stage 3, Varnish: As collage achieves structural balance and compositional harmony varnish is applied. The varnish I use is Dura brand acrylic gloss. At less than $20/gallon it is considerably less expensive than art-label brands. I have used this for around ten years with no image yellowing or surface cracking. I dilute 1:1 with water to facilitate absorbtion, and apply 2 coats to bind the surface. Never vigorously brush varnish as it results in bubbles which remain and give the image a white overlay.
Stage 4, Mounting: When the image is dry it is layed out on plywood, thickness determined by image size. The outline is traced on the plywood and cut out with a jigsaw. The plywood edge is painted (I prefer black) and the image then glued to the surface. I then apply another 2-3 coats of varnish (still diluted 1:1) and, assuming I am satisfied with the image, it is complete. If I am not satisfied I may continue to add or remove materials, and add or remove plywood until I am satisfied.
